Bath baseball tourney Saturday

The newly-formed Bath River Dogs pee wee baseball squad will host a four-team invitational on Saturday.

The one-day event will be a round robin tournament, with the top team from head-to-head play crowned champion.

The event kicks off with a 9 a.m. contest between Bath and Hartland, with Plaster Rock taking on Nackawic at 10:30 a.m. Bath will have its second game of the day at noon versus Plaster Rock, to be followed by Hartland against Nackawic at 1:30 p.m.

Bath's third and final match of the day is at 3 p.m., to be followed by a 4:30 start for Hartland and Plaster Rock.

The Western Valley Summer Co-Ed Baseball League's rules will be followed for this event, as games will be seven innings or 90 minutes - whichever comes first.

Awards will be given out for the first and second place squad, with a championship trophy for first place.

Ladies golf finals in Woodstock

The Woodstock Golf and Curling Club's 2008 Ladies Club Championships will be held Saturday, Aug. 9 and Sunday, Aug. 10.

The 36-hole event will feature some of the region's top female duffers.

N.B. swim meet Saturday

A provincial swim meet will be held Saturday, Aug. 9 at the Florenceville pool.

The event will be from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Young athletes from throughout the River Valley region will take part.

Speedway 660 back in action Saturday

After a relaxing weekend that gave fans, staff and local drivers a chance to enjoy the hot summer weather, Speedway 660 will return to Geary, N.B. with a big event to kick off the month of August.

On Saturday, Aug. 9, Speedway will host the Firecracker 150, the second BIG Sportsman event of the 2008 season.

Meanwhile, the Irving Lubricants Pro Stocks will return this week along with the Coast Tire Street Stocks who will provide the supporting cast for the event with points races of their own.

Aside from the Firecracker 150, the Irving Lubricants Pro Stocks and the Coast Tire Street Stocks will be providing the fans with some action packed points racing.

The Irving Lubricants Pro Stock division had a week off last weekend for the CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour to swing through for the second event.

This weekend, all Pro Stock drivers from the weekly series will get back into the swing of things for the points championship.

Soccer teams in play this week

Squads in the St. John River Valley Men's Soccer League will be in play this week.

On Monday, Aug. 11 King Street Shoes of Woodstock will travel north to St. Basile to take on Edmundston, while on Wednesday, Aug. 13 Florenceville will play hometown Hartland; Perth will square off versus the Xplornet X-Men in Woodstock, and Grand Falls will be at Edmundston in Edmundston.

All games start at 7 p.m.

Hartland basketball camp Aug. 11 to 15

Basketball prospects from the River Valley region are getting ready for their annual event in Hartland.

The 2008 edition of the Shoot ‘Em Up basketball camp is set for Aug. 11 to 15 at the Hartland Community School.

Players from Grades 5 to 10 will take part.

Weekday sessions will go from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Events and activities will promote skill development in the popular sport.

Paintball Aug. 14 in Woodstock

The sport of paintball continues to prosper throughout the province.

In celebration of this increase in numbers in recent years, an outdoor session in the sport will be offered on Thursday, Aug. 14 in Woodstock.

Local youth from ages 12 to 15 can take part.

The Woodstock Recreation Department will host the get-together.

The capture-the-flag event will go from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Hiking at Fundy Park Aug. 21

An outdoor adventure for kids of the 8 to 15 age group to Fundy National Park will be held on Aug. 21.

The Woodstock Recreation Department will host this event.

The gathering will allow the youngsters to view the world's biggest tides.

The event will be held from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Participants will leave from the Carleton Civic Centre in Woodstock.

Cost to sign up will include transportation and those planning to attend are asked to bring a lunch and a bathing suit.
