It was a tough end to a great tournament for the Woodstock Bowlacade squad.

The local side made it all the way to the playoff round of the 2008 New Brunswick Men's Candlepin Bowling Championships, which wrapped up at the Moncton Fairlanes Bowling Centre on Saturday, only to be stopped in its title quest.

Woodstock ended the event's 20-team round robin tied for first with 2007 champs Ray Cormier Trucking of Moncton (110-28), a tally which qualified them for the quarter-finals.

From there, however, the local side lost its momentum and were later eliminated in head-to-head play in the semi-finals against the Campbellton Lions, losing 1853-1696 on pinfall.

The Saint John Shock eventually won the crown, dropping the Campbellton Lions 1,849-1,821 on Saturday to take the trophy.

The 70th annual event marked the first time a Saint John-based team won the title in 18 years.

In other candlepin bowling news, defending champ Woodstock #1 came home with a silver medal from the 2008 Men's B Provincial Championships, held at the Riverview Parklane Centre.

Woodstock ended up in a tie for second with its 48-16 overall record.

This year's crown went to Saint John with its 50-14 tally.
