WHS Thunder in ice action this week
The Woodstock High School AAA Thunder boys hockey team will start its 2008-09 NBIAA pre-season this week with two games.
They take on the Hartland High AA Huskies on Thursday, Oct. 16 in a 7 p.m. start at the Carleton Civic Centre.
Woodstock will also take on Fredericton High School on the road on Friday, Oct. 17 at 7:30 p.m. at the LBR rink.
CNHS against HHS in ice play Oct. 15
The Carleton North Stars AAA boys varsity hockey team will play its first pre-season game of the new campaign on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at the Northern Carleton Civic Centre against the Hartland High Huskies.
Start time is 7:30 p.m.
WRC to host Poker Run Oct. 16
The Woodstock Running Club (WRC) will host a Poker Run on Thursday, Oct. 16 starting at 6:30 p.m. from the Woodstock Golf and Curling Club.
Cost is $5 for WRC members and $8 for non-members.
"Participants will run/walk to pick up cards at four different locations around the area," said a recent release from the WRC. "The best hand will be the winner. Prizes will be awarded and snacks will also be provided."
Canada Games softball camp Oct. 17
Organizers of Softball New Brunswick's 2009 Canada Summer Games team program for girls will host a training camp on Saturday, Oct. 17 at the CN Sportsplex Field in Moncton from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Rain date is Sunday, Oct. 18.
All players born in 1990 or later are eligible to attend. The registration fee for the camp is $40.00.
Participants are asked to bring a lunch.

Scotiabank launches Hockey Kids Tonight program
Scotiabank is giving minor hockey league teams across the country a chance to introduce Canada's top broadcast, CBC's Hockey Night in Canada, to millions of hockey fans nation-wide.
Scotiabank Hockey Tonight Kids will select 25 teams to be featured on the pre-game show
Scotiabank Hockey Tonight, hosted by Ron MacLean.
"The Scotiabank Hockey Tonight Kids program was an absolute hit with the kids last year and we're thrilled to be ‘calling up' another 25 teams this season," said John Doig, senior vice-president of marketing for Scotiabank in a recent release from the company. "We have always been proud of our support of minor hockey in Canada and we're thrilled to be giving kids across the country a once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience the excitement of Hockey Night in Canada and the big leagues."
With the first minor league team's introduction set to air on this week, parents, coaches, and team managers are busy entering on behalf of their teams. House league teams, ages 8 to 16, are still eligible to enter, and must submit a team photo and a short story explaining why their team should be chosen as the next Scotiabank Hockey Tonight Kids.
Teams can sign up online for their chance to be selected at cbcsports.ca/hockey.
