Archers gearing up for events

Local archers are gearing up for several top-flight events set for the coming days.

On Sunday, May 18 a 3D outdoor event will be held in Moncton.

The contact person for the event is Maurice Levesque at 855-6169.

On Saturday, May 24 a Field event will be held in Bathurst.

Those wishing more information may call Raymond Christie at 548-2061.

On Sunday, May 24 a 3D shoot will be held in Woodstock.

Those planning to compete may contact Stephen Little for more details.

In addition, on May 31 a 1440 event will be hosted by the Belledune club.

The organizer of the title event is Trevor Furlotte (522-5237).

B-ball sign-up May 20

The Woodstock Minor Baseball group is still looking for players for its 2008 season.

Recreational and competitive athletes wishing to sign up for the association can so so at a registration night set for Tuesday, May 20 at 7 p.m. at the Carleton Civic Centre's lobby.

This event will be open to all ages and skill levels.

Fees for the new season have been dropped by $60 in order to encourage more players to register.

Programs offered by the Woodstock group on 2008 will include T-Ball, junior mosquito, mosquito, pee wee, and bantam.

Rollers win ladies candlepin crown

The Woodstock Bowlacade Rollers successfully defended its crown at the 2008 Southern NB Ladies Candlepin Bowling Championships, which wrapped up on the May 10 weekend at the newly-renovated Fairview Lanes in Saint John.

The local side ended up with a 70-18 overall record.

Members of the winning team include Delta Holder, Alta Demerchant, Penny Pratt, Ann Haines, Barb Martin, and Judy Thompson

Second place went to the Sussex Angels with a 68-20 tally.

The Grand Lake Spoilers ended up in third

The big match for the local ladies was its final one, against the Spoilers.

The Rollers needed four points for the title, and got it by winning the first string by one pin and another by 12 pins.

Woodstock goes 1-2 in rugby play

Woodstock High School went 1-2 in recent days in NBIAA boys rugby play.

On Wednesday, May 7 WHS dropped Nackawic 37-0.

Jarod Demerchant scored three tries in the first half, while Dylan Farrell, "Texas" Andrew Hansen, Matt Milbury, and Jeff O'Donnell each scored one in the second half.

O'Donnell added one convert.

On Saturday, May 10, Carleton North defeated WHS 24-3.

O'Donnell had the lone score for WHS on a penalty.

On Tuesday, May 13 WHS was dropped 46-0 by Hartland.

Score at the half was 36-0, as Scott Oliver, Patrick Demerchant, and Jordan Corrick each crossed the line twice, while Jesse Ginson had one try and three converts.

Jody Haines also scored for the victors.

Next game for WHS is a home match on Saturday against CNHS at 3 p.m.

Stormdale canoe poker run May 24

The annual Stormdale Canoe Poker Run will be held on Saturday, May 24.

Participants will run the Becaguimac Stream from the bridge in Pole Hill to the Stormdale Covered Bridge and collect cards at designated stops.

Each person for this adult-only event must have a life jacket.

Registration will be at the bridge in Pole Hill at 11 a.m.

Cost to register is $10 a person.

The event will include a cash barbecue at the finish.

All proceeds will go toward the construction of the new arena.

Donnie Hamilton Memorial May 16, 17

The 2008 Donnie Hamilton Memorial Men's Orthodix Softball Tournament will be held on Friday and Saturday in Hartland.

Games will be held at Tracy Field and Glass Field.

Seven teams are entered, including M &A, Dangles, Exit Realty, and Carleton Mutual in the Blue Mug Division and TNT, Alpine, and Donnie's Crew in the Wild Thing Division.

Play gets underway 7 p.m. this evening at Tracy Field when M & A play the Danglers.

Games in the round-robin re-commence at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Cross-over playoff play starts at 4:30 p.m. at both fields, with semi-finals at 6 p.m.

The event's title match will be at 8 p.m., field to-be-announced.

Prizes will be awarded to the top squads.
