With the provincial and territorial consultation tour of the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA) review concluded, Tobique-Mactaquac MP Mike Allen looks forward to seeing the improvements Rob Nicholson, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, brings to the floor of the House of Commons.
"A lot of people in Tobique-Mactaquac are very concerned about the increase in youth crime – both from a personal standpoint and for the future of their communities," Allen said. "There is a definite need for measures to deter young people from committing criminal acts.
"At the same time, it's important to have effective means to rehabilitate young offenders and give them the opportunity to lead meaningful lives and contribute positively to their communities."
Minister Nicholson just concluded a cross-country tour where he met with key youth justice stakeholders and partners to gather their input on improvements to the YCJA. Roundtable participants across the country included law enforcement representatives, youth, the legal community and organizations representing youth, aboriginals, visible minorities and victims.
As well, briefs on the matter were submitted by stakeholders and concerned citizens.
"People I have spoken to want action on youth crime now," Allen said. "They are concerned about the socially disruptive and disrespectful behaviour of some young people."
In addition to the review, legislation has been tabled to protect communities from youth who pose a significant risk to public safety.
"Maintaining safe communities has been a priority of our government, and I'm very proud of the legislation we have brought forward to date," Allen said.
The Government of Canada has also:
* Passed into law the Tackling Violent Crimes Act that aims to better protect youth from sexual predators, protect society from dangerous offenders, get serious with drug-impaired drivers and toughen sentencing and bail for those who commit serious gun crimes;
* Passed legislation to increase penalties for those convicted of street racing;
* Passed legislation to end conditional sentences for serious personal injury offences;
* Introduced a National Anti-Drug Strategy, including legislation that would provide mandatory jail time for serious drug crimes;
* Invested in community projects across Canada that focus on youth;
* Tabled legislation to protect Canadians against identity theft; and
* Tabled legislation to tackle property theft, including the serious crime of auto theft.
