The New Brunswick Association for Community Living (NBACL) is participating in a national art installation from Oct. 2 to 4.

The Encampment is a large-scale art installation involving 70 tents which will sit illuminated on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Ont. Within each tent, provincial and territorial artists will have depicted stories of the struggles and achievements of children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

The association – a non-profit, charitable organization which works on behalf of children and adults with intellectual disabilities – is looking for New Brunswick stories for artists to use as inspiration. The stories should capture moments in the lives of people with an intellectual disability who are either living or deceased. The stories can be told by a person with an intellectual disability or with the assistance of a family member or friend. The stories should be limited to 100 to 200 words, capturing a special moment in the life of a person with an intellectual disability.

NBACL family support co-ordinator Tara Brinston said the collection of these stories will become a "landscape of action" and bring attention to the small moments which inspired change in a person's life.

"They can be a journal entry, an oral account, a newspaper article or a historical archive or an extract from a book with focus on a moment that changed a person's life," Brinston explained.

New Brunswick artists will select stories, which they will then interpret and display in the national exhibit along with a printed version of the personal accounts. Stories which are not selected for artistic interpretation will be recognized in The Encampment program and on the Web site www.TheEncampment.net.

For more information about how to submit your stories to The Encampment, contact Brinston at NBACL 1-866-622-2548 or (506) 543-4400.
