
Local golfers move up in N.B. Player-of-the-Year standings


Local athletes moved up last week in the New Brunswick Golf Association's 2008 Player-of-the-Year (POTY) standings by way of their recent top-flight results at two major events.
Points towards the overall N.B. crowns in both divisions are garnered by way of their placings at designated series stops.
On the men's side, Wade Girdwood of the Covered Bridge Golf and Country Club of Hartland captured the annual Lou Beatty Invitational on the July 20 weekend to move to a tie for ninth overall in the Canadian 2 for 1 Pizza N.B. POTY points standings.
As of July 25, Giberson had garnered 28 points on the campaign, while clubmate Gary Melanson - with 15 points - was in 19th.
Matt Gingras of Moncton leads the way with 55 points.
Rick Atherton of the Woodstock Golf and Curling Club remains in 26th with 9.5 points, with Adam Sullivan and Alec Sawyer of WGCC, and Neil Girdwood of CBGCC, tied for 30th with seven points.
Benson Thompson of Covered Bridge is tied for 37th with 4.5 points with Darren Farrekll of the WGCC, while Paul Pelky of Woodstock was tied for 41st with three points.
Doug Atherton and Lou Pelky of Woodstock are tied for 48th with 1.5 points, with Mark Hughes of the WGCC in a tie for 50th with one point.
On the ladies side, in the BMO Nesbitt Burns (Moncton) Ladies POTY standings, Margo McLeod of Woodstock is in 11th with 49 points, with clubmate Angela Welch in 16th with 25.5.
McLeod moved up by way of her top-five placing at the 2008 N.B. Ladies Amateur, which wrapped up on Saturday in Moncton.
They both trail Leanne Richardson of Country Meadows, who has 184 points.
Lisa Thomas of Woodstock is 32nd with 10 points, while Jocelyn Keirstead of the WGCC is 37th with 8.5 points.
