The Caraquet RCMP say they’ve received “several reports” of counterfeit Canadian $20 bills used to purchase goods and services at businesses in Caraquet.

Businesses only noticed the money was counterfeit following the transactions, police said in a news release.

Police say many of the counterfeit bills have been identifiable because they’re poor quality, are made from a different material, are different sizes or shapes, and in some cases had five black, double bars on both sides of the bill.

“In this case, we noticed that the paint was peeling off a $20 bill,” Caraquet RCMP Sgt. Charles Dubois said in the release.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone who has information that could help with the police investigation into the counterfeit bills is asked to contact the Caraquet RCMP at (506) 762-5222 or provide the information anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS(8477) or crimenb.ca.
