Romeo Dowyer, 19, of Dieppe, spent the last month at the Restigouche Hospital Centre in Campbellton undergoing a psychiatric evaluation. He returned to Moncton provincial court on Monday by phone from the Shediac jail.

According to the report from the doctor who analyzed him, Dowyer was found not to be suffering from any mental disorder at the time that would render him not criminally responsible for his actions. Dowyer said he doesn’t agree with that finding, which prompted Judge Paul Duffie to suggest that once he gets a lawyer he can attempt to get a second opinion.

Dowyer has not taken any steps yet to retain a lawyer so the judge encouraged him to apply for legal aid and set his bail hearing for Friday.

The accused appeared in court Nov. 20 and was charged with uttering a threat to Moncton High School students on Nov. 17.

New Brunswick RCMP Cpl. Hans Ouellette had said Codiac Regional RCMP received a report of threats from an online chat group that were directed at a school in the Moncton region.

“The threats described a future shooting event at an unknown date and time,” he said in an email at the time.

Two youths were also arrested in the investigation.
