A poem about Howie the unique cat

B6

This poem was written by a very strong DunRoamin' supporter who adopted Howie in 1999. Howie has a very unique personality.

The poem tells of only a few of his adventures, such as getting beaten up by a woodpecker, being chased home by a duck, escorting her SUV down her long driveway (walking at a snail's pace, then getting tired and laying down in the middle of the driveway so she can't drive past him), going walking with her and having to be carried back, and the time he was chased by a tiny dog and was lost for a day.

The Howie Poem

By Elaine Brown

They asked me to write about my cat, Howie,

I asked "What about Tailor, Luke, Hunni and Sunni

Since he has been the star of two past stories?"

"Oh, come on," they said, "He's just so funny!"

I hummed and hawed and scratched my head

Wondering how to describe this cat I had

He is not normal, although I keep his belly well fed.

He's been chased by ducks, pecked and scarred, you guessed it. He's bad!

On a warm summer day, the a/c better be on;

An escort is required down my driveway by him.

Now scholars much smarter than I have attempted to con;

But Howie has been known to lay down and yawn without a whim.

I often walk with my two dogs

Trailed behind by - you guessed - it: "Howie"

If we get too far ahead I just know he yells "Wait, you hogs,"

On the return trip he rides on my shoulder, makes me very growlie. Once during our walks Howie was chased by a little dog half his size;

The search party was huge during the cold wet night.

I don't know what the fuss was all about over a cat who teases me with live mice;

Eventually we all bedded down, and Howie was at the door at morning light.

Howie stories are numerous, frightening and comical. Garfield takes second place!
