A fatal accident along Route 10, near Minto, Easter Sunday claimed the lives of two men – one 24 and one 25. While police would not confirm the identity of the men by press time, it is believed both have family ties to Carleton County.

Police have not release the identity of the victims, other than to confirm they were young men – one 24 and the other 25. It is believed the men have family ties in the Hartland and Northern Carleton communities.

Emergency personnel from District 2 RCMP, Minto Fire Department members and paramedics responded to the scene to find a four-door Volkswagen sedan twisted into pile of metal.

The battered vehicle had rolled at least once and ended up resting in a snowbank just metres from Route 10.

Pieces of metal and shards of plastic and glass were scattered across nearby snowbanks.

District 2 RCMP Const. Peter Vail said two people were pronounced dead at the scene.

He said police are trying to determine what caused the fatal accident. Road conditions were good, say police.

"The exact circumstances ... the situation with the scene here and the debris field as such, leave us in no position to determine what the cause is at this time," he said.

Const. Vail said a collision-investigation expert from Oromocto arrived to study the accident scene.

"At this point in time, we're starting to identify witnesses and we'll be conducting interviews and a reconstruction with the view of determining what caused (the accident) as soon as is practical," Const. Vail told Canadaeast New Service Sunday evening.

Vail said firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to remove the victims from the vehicle. The collision-investigation team examined what appeared to be skid marks hundreds of metres from the final resting place of the vehicle.

A stop sign lay bent and broken on the ground near the car.

RCMP closed the highway to traffic in order to allow investigators the chance to collect evidence.
