Thumbs up once again to Bugle-Observer assistant editor Angela Ferguson for her dedication and work ethic over the past three years. Angela is moving on from the newspaper to explore life in the world of radio, more specifically as news director with EZ Rock 104.1 FM. Angela has been a great asset to the Bugle-Observer during her term with us and will be greatly missed. The Bugle-Observer staff wishes her all the luck in her new position. At the same time, the Bugle-Observer welcomes reporter Brian Tait of Quispamsis into our editorial team. Brian graduated from St. Thomas University in the spring with a bachelor of arts degree with a major in journalism.

Thumbs up to Brunswick News and the Bugle-Observer for giving me such a wonderful opportunity. It's been a pleasure working as a staff journalist and assistant editor, and I am proud to say I once was a member of the Bugle-Observer team. Thank you for the friendships, the experiences and the memories.

Thumbs down to Sports Illustrated, for picking the Philadelphia Eagles in its 2008 NFL preview issue to not only take the NFC East, but to make it as far as the 2009 Super Bowl. Last I checked, the division's two powerhouses are the real deal in the East. The New York Giants, who they predict will take third place, are still the defending champs and have a chance to repeat, while the Dallas Cowboys – SI's #2 in the East – are this close to making a major playoff run this fall. Maybe the editors at SI thought its Sept. 1, 2008, edition was a dry run for its April 1, 2009, press run? Maybe this could explain the mag's ill-timed attempt at making themselves less-than-serious.

Thumbs up to Cliff Fletcher dumping the $2-million pylon Bryan McCabe. I think that is the best move he has done yet as acting general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Now, if the still-undecided Mats Sundin would make up his mind, Toronto could begin rebuilding. I'd start with only keeping Kaberle, Steen, Stajan and Toskala and ship the rest off to DaDa Land. I'm not a Toronto fan, but I would like to see them make the playoffs once in awhile, considering we only have six Canadian clubs out of 30 in the NHL. Besides, Ottawa needs a little competition in their division, and the Habs just can't cut it.

Thumbs up to the federal Green Party for sticking to its guns, and threatening legal action against Canadian broadcasters if leader Elizabeth May isn't allowed to participate in any televised debates leading up to the next federal election, expected to be called for Oct. 14. Broadcasters have refused to allow the Greens to participate in the past because they didn't have a single seat in Parliament. But with the announcement last week that former Liberal MP Blair Wilson would join the Greens, there's really no reason to keep May out of any debates. The Greens picked up over 4 per cent of the vote in the last election, and run candidates in every riding, and May deserves the same opportunity as the other leaders.
