Lauren Slipp of Woodstock is participating in the Bates College Junior Semester Abroad program.

Slipp, a French and neuroscience double major, is studying in Dakar, Senegal, through the Council on International Educational Exchange.

Students at Bates have the option of taking a semester or a full year in a foreign country. Both programs provide them opportunities to study and conduct research at their choice of hundreds of colleges and universities throughout the world.

According to Associate Dean of Students Stephen Sawyer, the program director, the experience enhances students' college careers by offering involvement in other cultures and experience with other languages.

Some students at Bates enrol independently at the foreign university of their choice, while others chose foreign-study programs through accredited American Colleges.

Slipp is the daughter of Woodstock Mayor Arthur and Lynne Slipp. She is a 2006 graduate of Kimball Union Academy.

Bates College is widely regarded as one of the finest U.S. liberal Arts colleges. Alumni frequently cite the capacities they developed at Bates for critical assessment, analysis, expression, aesthetic sensibility and independent thought.

About 40 per cent of students participate in career internships, and more than two thirds of recent graduates enrol in graduate study within 10 years after graduation.

Bates was founded in 1855 by Maine abolitionists, and Bates graduates have always included men and women from diverse racial, ethnic and religious backgrounds.
