Meet me at the Market...maybe

Right smack dab in the middle of a municipal election campaign, the holy grail of downtown Fredericton is up for sale.

The Boyce Farmer's Market is only opened for a few hours once a week (except for special events) and during those hours it is PACKED.

Politicians go there to campaign and I don't think there's a piece of Fredericton Liberal MP Andy Scott propaganda that I receive which doesn't mention him going to the market.

Now it is for sale and the opinions are flying.

City Hall says it is tapped out and can't afford it.

Although it would appear to be a natural fit the City is right, they can't and any municipal candidate who comes to your door and says they can doesn't know what they're talking about.

The City has been getting into projects left, right, and centre and something has to give. Whether it's new rinks, a new convention centre or meddling into a Church's plans to expand by buying a derelict old school, it all costs money and lots of it so I tend to agree they don't have the cash unless they significantly raise taxes (that isn't a suggestion by the way).

What's the solution?

You tell me.

The details of this particular story a a bit too fuzzy yet to draw a lot of conclusions. I suspect there is still more to come including even possible legal challenges over actual ownership. However, of all the comments thus far the one from the Mayors office claiming (as you do spinks) that we are all tapped out is by far the most humorous. Regardless whether the price is as quoted or much less suggesting that the city couldn't come up with what would arguably be the smallest investment made by this Mayor since returning to office is a tad overly dramatic. If as the Mayor suggests we are in fact that broke then I would have much bigger concerns about the monies already earmarked to be spent. If we can't handle even 1.5 million for something that at the very least should pay for itself what ever will we do for the next 20 years if something really serious happens? Perhaps we should be looking a little closer at where our money is going in this coming election if that is the case.

Can't argue with you there DS. That's a good question to ask this coming election. However it doesn't take an accountant to realize all those projects they've had their hands in cost money and lots of it. While broke may be going a bit far, the fact that they're not even entertaining the market idea means they're tapped. I suspect York House put them over the edge. It's still sitting pretty derelict last time I drove by. According to a previous interview with the mayor on CBC, they're going to take their time renovating it. In other words we don't have the money right now. Quite a different song from a few months ago when they claimed to be desperate for office space so it was a good deal for taxpayers. One now has to wonder.
