THUMBS UP to members of the Good Neighbor Fellowship for taking the time to raise funds for local children in need. The ladies will conduct a MannaWalk this monthinHartlandandWoodstock. All the money raised will purchase vitamins for children with health issues.

I’m amazed at how many people in Carleton County devote their efforts to help their fellow neighbours. That deserves two thumbs up.

THUMBS UP to Lauren Crompton who, despite her cerebral palsy, made sure she had fun at the fair. She should serve as an example to all those healthybodied people who find only reasons to complain. And thumbs up to the Campbell Amusement staff and OHW volunteers who helped Lauren have fun. And a thumb way up to Jamie Tweedie, who not only took Lauren to the fair, but made sure to publicly thank those who helped bring a smile to her face. You’re all a great example of positive thinking and making the most out of life. Check out Jamie’s letter on the opposite page.

Thumbs up to the tens of millions of diehard track-and-field fans across the globe, who will be treated to – arguably – some of the sport's greatest performances in its venerable history at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Every four years, we wait to see who will be the next hero of the oval, and the Olympics always provide us with at least two-weeks worth of thrills and a half-dozen instant superstars. Personally, I enjoy the long course races more than the sprints because these events give you enough time – especially in the heats – to gauge who are the contenders and who are the pretenders.

Thumbs down to commercialization. I mean, what has become of our society? I recently took a trip to Niagara Falls with my family and was shocked to find one of Canada's natural beauties surrounded by carnival rides and games. Niagara Falls looks more like Canada's Disneyland than it does a tourist attraction. I went because I wanted to see the pure beauty and power of the falls, not Dracula's House of Fear or ride a ferris wheel. Those are things that belong at Old Home Week, not a natural tourist attraction. Oh yeah, the falls are still running and are still an impressive sight to behold.

Thumbs up to the Woodstock Bugle-Observer for taking me on as a summer intern reporter to help me complete my journalism degree. It has been a great experience living and working in Woodstock. I am very grateful for the time, patience and guidance from my colleagues and the people I dealt with daily on my court reporter beat. Thanks also not only to Woodstock, but the surrounding area as well. The community has been good to me and, having lived around the globe, I can say it is one of the most beautiful, peaceful places in the world. I am going back to St. Thomas in the fall to finish up my final year, but a part of me will always be on the hills and dales of Carleton County.
