The Fraser Institute of Vancouver launched its first student video contest designed to encourage debate and find creative market-based solutions to Canada’s ailing health care system.

“We are excited to provide students with the opportunity to contribute to Canada’s health care discussion in a new creative and innovative format,” said Vanessa Schneider, the Institute’s director of student programs.

The contest invites secondary and post-secondary students from across Canada to create three-minute videos that examine the problems of Canada’s ailing health-care system and propose innovative solutions.

Contestants are also required to post their video entries on YouTube.

To enter, contestants must submit a concept paper describing the content of their video by Sept. 30, 2008.

The deadline for the video submission is on Oct. 31, 2008. Visit www. fraserinstitute.org for more details and contest rules.

A panel of judges will determine the winning entries based on originality, clear expression of ideas, production values, quality of story, and understanding of topic.

A special Viewers’ Choice Award will be awarded to the videos with the highest rating on YouTube. Winners from both the secondary and postsecondary categories will share $9,000 in cash prizes and runners-up will receive handheld camcorders valued at $500 each.

The contest is sponsored by The Lotte and John Hecht Memorial Foundation.

Winners will be announced in late November.
